Golf Putting Tips To Help You Make More Putts Consistently

By: Mary Chillders

Putting is one of the most difficult parts of the game of golf but if you can master it you can make a big difference at lowering your scores. Most players are actually naturally pretty effective at putting. If you see kids putt you will find that many tend to putt very well even without receiving any kind of lessons.

Most golfers struggle at putting when they start being overly concerned by putting mechanics. Developing a good putting stroke does matter so be sure to learn it well. Maybe take a putting lesson from a local golf pro. One useful thing to keep in mind about putting mechanics is to ensure that the golf ball is directly below your eyes.

You can check for this by holding a golf ball at eye level and then let it drop and see if it makes contact with the ball that is in the normal position of your putting stance. There a lot of different putters that come in many different sizes and shapes. The important thing is to pick the putter that you feel the most comfortable with.

Keep in mind that putting really is more an art than a science, sometimes you will feel like you did everything right and the ball still does not go in the hole. Remember that there are many variables you have no control over that could have caused a putt to miss so do not beat yourself up all the time.

Maintaining confidence levels is very important to help you become the best putter you can be. You need to think of yourself as a good putter and develop the skill of forgetting your missed putts. Instead focus on the putts you did make, this will help to boost your confidence level as a putter.

A large number of putters doubt their ability to determine the speed on longer putts. A lot of golfers think that this is some special gift that only a few players have. The truth is that we all have good feel and touch as long as you trust your natural ability and do not doubt it. Make sure that you hit your putts without consciously thinking about putting mechanics.

As you are about to make contact with your putt it is important to focus your mind on the target you have selected. You want to reduce your thoughts as much as possible and simply allow your mind and body to make the best stroke possible. Do not start doubting your read or your stroke as you are about to hit the putt and avoid any thoughts of past missed putts. Follow some of these strategies to help you develop into a solid putter.

When starting the downswing the shoulders should be passive, allowing the forward motion of the legs to pull the right shoulder down and forward, squaring the shoulders to the target line at impact. If the shoulders have moved into an open position (facing to the left of the target) prior to impact, the clubhead will travel outside-to-inside of the target line. This brings the clubhead over the ball promoting an over the top move.

Golf Swing

You cant fire a gun unless you pull the trigger, right? A similar concept also applies to the golf swing, which also usually requires a trigger move to get the body moving. Now, not everyone has a trigger, some manage to swing well from a static position to a dynamic position. But for the rest of us who often find confusion when it comes to where to start the golf swing, a trigger move can help you start swinging in a fluid and consistent manner.

Learn How To Swing A Golf Club The Right Way

With swinging a golf club so vital to playing a great game of golf, just about everyone eventually looks for information or lessons on how to swing a golf club. For many it becomes a quest like the Holy Grail, finding the perfect golf swing.

For some beginners, learning how to swing a golf club is not a difficult task. Many people who have played baseball and become accomplished at it, can find it very easy to to transfer a baseball swing down to a golf swing. For others, learning how to swing a standard golf club becomes a seemingly monumental task. There seems to be so much to remember that they become overwhelmed.

The golf swing can be broken down into various sections. There is the backswing, the downswing, the impact and the follow-through. Each of these can and has been analyzed to try and find the perfect swing for each and every golfer. But then, there is also such a thing as a pre-shot routine, that's the sequence of events you go through before each and every swing. The really professional golfers do the exact same thing before each and every shot. They have their pre-shot routine down to a science and they follow it religiously. Quite often, the budding golfer or even the longtime duffer will continuously change their pre-shot routine almost daily looking for just that little extra secret or edge. Instead, they only succeed in messing up their golf swing and the whole thing starts all over again.

And whether you are just taking up golf, or been playing for some time, you should be aware that you have a tremendous tool to improve your golf swing in your golf game. I'm talking about the videos we can all watch today of golf professionals and how they play. And amazingly we also have on demand videos on the Internet that are absolutely free of great golfers like Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh or John Daly or past greats like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead, Walter Hagan or Gene Sarazen. Imagine being able to sit and watch how golfers, credited with having great golf swings, perform the task. Talk about a golden opportunity to learn.

But keep in mind that these videos still needs to be used in conjunction with golf lessons. A few good golf lessons with a local pro and then a watching how the PGA professionals put it into effect, can do wonders to advance your game. But what about if you can't afford golf lessons? Well, there are a number of good books on the market that you can read and then watch how the pros apply it. One of the best e-books I've ever seen is one put out by Golf Hall of Fame legend Gene Littler. Littler had a fluid swing I could only dream about. If you don't believe me, you can find videos of this golf legend and see his amazing fluid golf swing for yourself. many have called his swing the best, or at the very least the second-best, golf swing of all-time.

Combining free videos from the internet with a few wisely spent dollars on the proper golf knowledge will do wonders for your golf swing and your game. Ignoring the wise path to success will only see you continue to drive the ball left and right instead of straight down the fairway. The decision is all up to you.

I see far too many instances where a player uses the wrong type of ball. They might have the Great Big Bertha, some space age composite irons, or even the fancy wing-tipped shoes, but if the golf ball does not suit the player or the circumstance, then the overall outcome of the shot will be adversely affected.

Take Off Like A Jumper
A correctly timed pivot will cause the left leg to straighten just after impact, like a ski jumper launching into the air. This maximizes distance.
